What this shipped
The numbers that mattered to the client — measured before and after.
The problem
What we were called in to fix
A founder had validated demand for an AI writing and research tool but had only a Figma prototype. They needed a real, billable, multi-tenant product — not another demo — fast enough to start charging before runway ran out.
The hard parts weren't the AI calls; they were the unglamorous essentials: team accounts, roles, usage metering, billing that matched real consumption, and a search that actually found things.
Our approach
How we actually built it
No magic — just the right architectural calls in the right order.
We shipped a multi-tenant foundation first — organizations, roles, invites and row-level data isolation — so every later feature inherited access control for free.
Usage-based billing wired straight to Stripe: every AI action emits a metered event, so invoices reflect real consumption instead of flat tiers nobody trusts.
AI features (generation, summarization, auto-tagging) sit behind a shared queue with per-plan quotas, so one heavy user can't degrade everyone else.
Hybrid search — keyword plus vector — over user content, so results are both precise and semantically relevant.
The outcome
What changed for the client
Launched to first paying customers in ten weeks, billing on real usage from day one.
Per-plan quotas and model routing kept gross margin healthy even as AI usage grew.
The multi-tenant core let the team add two more AI features later without touching auth or billing.
